Pearly Horn: Mercorne's Latest Creation: Zebu Horn and BIO Resin

Mercorne has been supporting cutlers since 1992 by offering a wide range of materials for their creations. For our 30th anniversary, we wanted to offer a material that sums up our experience and know-how. We started with the horn and have been working on hybrid product design for over 15 years. A desire to reduce waste and respect the environment; this brought us to the PERALY HORN. A material made from crushed horn and bio resin.

PRESENTATION :

Horn, without the constraints of animal products with organic resin. Based on horn reduced to flakes in a special grinder, we add resin charged with pearly dyes. The resin used is an organic epoxy resin.

Working the horn, generate a lot of "products" that are unusable for cutlery. For a few years now, European regulations no longer allow them to  sold it as fertilizer. We will therefore recycle them with PEARLY HORN. And in the process we give back to the horn these letters of nobility.

For the resin we of course respect the drastic European regulations. For this innovation we have chosen to use an organic epoxy resin, formulated in France.

Our two lines of research were to obtain a material with aesthetic and mechanical qualities. Machining tests: cutting, drilling, sanding and polishing are very positive.

USEFUL INFORMATION  :

We have worked on the industrialization of the manufacturing process. But to obtain a regular result with this aspect we must work on thin plates (maximum 10 mm thick).

Colors available today: Blue, aluminum, copper, khaki, green and gold. We have chosen to offer, from the launch, 6 colors to allow cutlers to dress sets of 6 knives.

The choice of the BIO epoxy resin presents a difficulty: The PEARLY HORN cannot withstand the dishwasher.
