White mother of pearl

Latin name: Pinctada margaritifera (sea pearl oil).

Origin: China / USA.

Colour: white iridescent.

Mother-of-pearl is an organic material produced by some molluscs, including oysters, mussels, mother-of-pearls and certain shellfish. It forms inside the shell as a protective substance around a foreign body, like a grain of sand.

Characteristics :

  • Iridescent aspect: The mother-of-pearl has a shimmering radiance with changing colours due to the refraction of light on its microscopic layers.
  • Hardness: Although softer than precious stones, the mother-of-pearl is relatively hard, giving it some resistance to scratches.
  • Smooth texture: The mother-of-pearl surface is polished and smooth to the touch, making it a pleasant material for jewelry and ornaments.

Origin:

The mother-of-pearl is produced by molluscs when a foreign body, such as a parasite or a grain of sand, enters the shell. To protect itself, the animal secretes calcium carbonate and conchyolin, forming superimposed layers that make up the mother-of-pearl.

Sustainability:

The mother-of-pearl is generally durable, but is less resistant to shocks and scratches than some other materials. However, when used with care, mother-of-pearl can retain its radiance and beauty for many years.

Uses:

The mother-of-pearl is appreciated for its natural beauty and is used in the manufacture of jewellery such as necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings. It is also used in the creation of decorative objects, buttons, handles of musical instruments, and more. However, due to the scarcity of certain mother-of-pearl species and environmental concerns, synthetic alternatives are sometimes preferred to reduce the impact on marine life.
