Galuchat

Origin: Thailand. Comments: Galuchat is a fish skin (especially shark or skate) used in cabinetmaking. In Europe, the first signs of proven use are around the 15th and 16th centuries. The galuchat, the skin of squale or pastenague ray, owes its name to Jean-Claude Galluchat, master-gainer of King Louis XV, who was the first in France to use these rare and mysterious materials to dress the most precious objects. But it is in the Far East that we find the first fish skin sheathed objects, from the eighth century in Japan: inros (small medical boxes hung on the belt), plastrons, sheaths and sword handles). We find this work in the 15th century on trunks and trunks in Korea, China and Tibet.
