FROM THE DIVERSE RANGE OF MATERIALSAND COLOURS TO THE MAMMOTH IVORY

We started up in the knife industry by offering Zebra horn and then expanded by offering a large choice of materials to meet a range of requirements.

At the outset Mercorne used natural materials, chosen for their aesthetic and/or mechanical qualities. By expanding we were able to source a range of exotic wood from all over the world. Then an opportunity arose for bone, antlers and even mammoth ivory.

During this period of diversification we were able to provide composite materials but supplies were often unreliable. So we embarked on a phase of development and spent a lot of time and energy acquiring the machines and the know-how to produce our own composite materials. Using our new found knowledge, we were able to combine a wonderful range of natural products, which on their own didn’t have the mechanical quality we needed but did have exciting variations of colour and texture, and combine them with our resins. The result was a new range of unique products.

It marked a real turning point for the company. Before this point Mercorne had been known principally as a firm of “cutters”, selling re-worked natural material. From this moment on, Mercorne became manufacturers of original items, known for inventive and creative use of natural materials, re-imagined within modern resins.

This is how we became involved in the labelling of sustainable wood “made in France”… and even “made in Lozere” (a real proud moment for us) with the inclusion of feathers, fabric, pine cones and the latest, cow pats….. Aubrac cows of course. The limit is our imagination...
