Corundum is an abrasive that is used for abrasive belts and polishing pastes, for example. With Emery these are the two main abrasives serving as the polishing action. Corundum has more abrasive power than emery. More generally, corundum is an extremely hard rock (level 9 on the Mohs scale), the second strongest stone behind diamonds. Used for its strong cutting power.
