Olive ash burl is a strong, dense material.

Olive ash is a subspecies of ash with even prettier patterns than the classic ash.

Latin name: Fraxinus angustifolia

Other names: narrow-leaf ash and Midi ash

Origin: Southern Europe

Color: Sapwood and heartwood range from white to pale brown.

Comments: Olive ash (Fraxinus angustifolia) is a precious wood appreciated by cabinetmakers. With its fine grain, warm color and homogeneous appearance, it provides a beautiful base for the creation of furniture and handicrafts. Its strength and stability make it an ideal choice for long-lasting, aesthetically remarkable creations.

This tree essentially grows in European countries (France, England, Germany and Italy). Its grain is straight and its texture is rough. The sap-wood and the perfect-wood have colours going from white to pale brown. Its wood is half hard, it has a browner hollow vein, is supple and resistant. Another positive feature is that it is practically shock-proof so less capable to fissure.

This wood can be easily hand worked as well as with machines. It sticks easily and offers a smooth finishing.

Natural Wood: Wood is a natural material greatly used in knife handles making. We offer a wide range of woods selected specially for their aesthetical and/or mechanical qualities. Whatever type of knife you wish to make, you will find here a wide variety of woods available in the form of slabs, handles or blocks. We bring a particular attention in handles making so that they are paired.

Difference between classic ash and olive ash: Ash and olive ash are two different species belonging to the genus Fraxinus. Here are a few differences between the two:

  • Species: Ash refers to several species of the genus Fraxinus, while Olive Ash refers specifically to the species Fraxinus angustifolia.
  • Origin: Ash is native to various parts of the world, including North America, Europe and Asia, while Olive Ash is mainly found in southern Europe.
  • Appearance: Ash has a generally grey, fissured bark, with compound, multi-leaved leaves. Olive ash, on the other hand, has smooth, gray bark, with narrow, elongated leaves.
  • Uses : Ash wood is prized for its strength and is commonly used in the manufacture of furniture, cabinets, flooring and similar applications. Olive ash wood, because of its flexibility and resistance to water, is often used to make tools, tool handles, barrels and various handicrafts.

It's important to note that olive ash is often considered a subspecies of ash (Fraxinus angustifolia) and that the terms "ash" and "olive ash" can be used interchangeably in certain contexts.
