The tanning is the operation that consists in transforming the skin into leather thanks to tannins of different natures, vegetable tanning and mineral tanning.

Both methods of tanning have their advantages and disadvantages. The type of tanning is chosen according to the characteristics of the leather to be obtained.

What is vegetable tanning? Vegetable tanning is the oldest method. The tannins used are vegetable extracts, coming from tree barks (mimosa, quebracho, chestnut...). Vegetable tanning can be done by soaking in vats or basins, over periods of several weeks or in tannery drums over periods of several days. The leathers obtained are often thick, firm, even hard.

These leathers are used in cutlery, for the manufacture of cases, they are also used for the manufacture of belts, bandoliers, saddles and for the firmer ones, soles.

Mineral tanning is the most common method, it requires the use of mineral tannins, mainly Chromium salts, supplemented by iron and zirconium salts...

Mineral tanning is achieved by soaking in tannery drums, over periods of a few hours to a few days.

This very fast tanning, offers very flexible leathers, thinner, with very good light and great resistance to temperature.

These leathers are used for furniture, leather goods and shoes...
