Guide: How to choose the right polishing paste, depending on the work to be done?

Hello  Mercoryer,

We are pleased to announce our partnership with Mécapolior, which will begin in June 2022. For the occasion, it seems important to me to provide you with some practical information on polishing pastes in order to help you in your choice.

A trusted French partner and expert in its field

“Mécapolior is a French manufacturer of polishing products and abrasive belts in Thiers. The company manufactures discs in all qualities of cotton as well as polishing pastes studied for each phase of work, from preparation to finishing and even super finishing. The long experience in the profession as well as the reputation acquired over the years has enabled Mécapolior to guarantee a serious follow-up both on the quality of the finished product and on the speed of execution. » Fernando DINIS / general manager of Mécapolior

You will have understood that it is a quality company, which itself manufactures polishing pastes in France and many other products that you will soon have the chance to find on our sales area and our website. Mécapolior works exclusively with professionals, on large quantities. With Mercorne you now have access to high quality products for a very attractive price.

Three types of pastes: polishing, brushing and buffing

There are many names and variations but remember this:

Polishing paste: this is used first to remove the coarsest marks associated with machining. Its cutting power is very high and the shine is almost nil. Usually composed of natural abrasives such as corundum, silica, emery and pumice.

Brushing paste: often forgotten or paired with polishing paste. The brushing paste is an intermediate paste which intervenes for the preparation for the finish. The brushing paste removes the marks left by the polishing paste. Its cutting power is lower than the polishing paste but remains important and the shine is low.

Polishing paste: It is a finishing paste or even a super finish. It must be used after having polished and brushed your material well in order to obtain an optimal result. It is with this paste that you will make your material shine, for example. Unlike brushing and polishing pastes, it has almost no cutting power but on the other hand a very good shine. The polishing paste removes the marks left by the brush paste. Super finish polishing pastes are even more efficient in terms of the shine effect, to achieve maximum mirror polish.

BONUS : universal paste, it is an “improved” brushing paste that can perform polishing, brushing and buffing work at the same time. Simply change media to optimize cut or shine. This paste is less efficient than a specific paste but it is very practical if you want a single paste. Be careful, the COMPO PONCE universal paste will not allow you to make a shiny polish, only a satin finish.

What's in a polishing paste?

Unfortunately, I will not be able to tell you exactly the composition because it is a manufacturing secret that Mécapolior jealously guards. However, the major components that solidify/cagglomerate breads are refined beef tallow, stearin and paraffin. Add to this for polishing pastes a natural abrasive. For brushing and polishing pastes, aluminum oxide is very often included in the composition.

For vegans and medical applications then? There are also pastes without animal fats to meet medical standards, such as prosthetists and dentists. We specify each time in our produced sheets if a dough contains animal fats.

Cutting power and shine, what does that mean?

Pastes with a high cutting power, generally polishing pastes, are the most abrasive pastes. Compared to the grains of sanding belts, the coarser the grain, the more material you will remove. To be contrasted with shine, generally reserved for polishing paste. The higher the gloss, the better the buffing effect.

You can remember this:

-        Polishing paste: High cutting power / no shine

-        Brush paste: intermediate in cut and shine

-        Polishing paste: low or even non-existent cutting power / good to very good shine

Choosing the right support is essential.

“Having the right disc and the right paste will guarantee your success.”

Fernando DINIS / managing director of Mécapolior

I am preparing a complete guide very soon for you to understand the different types of support that exist, watch our blog regularly so as not to miss it. Know that we specify each time in the product description which support to use to help you. Here are the main supports that exist:

-        Felt (not) emery

-        Leather polisher

-        Treated or natural sisal

-        Scotch Brit

-        Soft, semi-rigid, rigid and finishing cotton

-        Flannel

How to apply the paste according to the texture?

Depending on the composition of the paste, the texture varies from very dry to very oily. You should know that the fatter the dough, the more it will be sensitive to high temperatures. Very greasy paste left in direct sunlight can melt quickly. If you live in an area with high temperatures, opt for a less greasy dough or store your dough in a place without high heat.

Moderate your pressure during application depending on the texture. A very dry dough requires strong pressure on the support to settle correctly. Unlike pasta with a greasy texture where you have to moderate your pressure. It is the rotation of the disc that will heat the bread and soften it in order to deposit a film on the disc.

Tip: for optimal work, you must work by increasing the lines. Understand this: while polishing, work diagonally from right to left. While brushing reversely from right to left, etc.

How do I choose my dough according to the material and in what order?

Indeed, each paste is specially designed for a type of material (except universal pastes). We have clearly specified in the title, which materials are concerned. They are classified like this:

-        Hard metals: steel and stainless steel

-        Soft materials: aluminium, nickel silver, wood, horns, etc.

-        Resin-based materials: stabilized wood, composites, inclusions, etc.

-        Wood: for all woods

For order as you have understood, you must start with a polishing paste, then brush and finish with a polishing paste or even a super finishing paste. Find in each product sheet a table according to the type of materials in order to guide you.
