NOUVEAU: Stabilized Chestnut Burl - Raffir!

Launch of limited edition stabilized chestnut burl – by Raffir

New release for June with an ultra-limited series of stabilized Chestnut Burl.

Chestnut burl is also known as horse chestnut, as its nut was a food for horses during antiquity. Its average lifespan is about 150 years (some specimens are over 300 years old). It can grow up to 25 meters tall. Chestnut burl is a well-known tree in Europe and Asia, especially in parks where it naturally provides shade during hot weather.

This tree has a relatively low density (0.4 to 0.55 kg/dm3). It is not a very well-known wood for craftsmanship in its natural state because it is too fragile. Therefore, it is rarely used in cutlery in its natural state. It is only after the stabilization process that it becomes dense enough to be machined.

Chestnut burl is composed of bark which, in its natural state, greatly weakens the tree's structure. However, after stabilization, it develops beautiful and unique patterns.

Like all stabilized woods, it is easy to work with, using the same tools as natural wood. However, care must be taken during sanding, as it is composed of approximately 50% resin, which can "burn" if sanding is too aggressive. It polishes very well, achieving a high shine.

This series will likely be the only one we will market, as it is difficult to find chestnut burls large enough.

Uses in its natural state: plywood, furniture, modeling, sculpture, and pyrography.
