Description

The micarta Mercorne special: exclusive colours not available elsewhere

The micarta special plate is the Mercorne benchmark for cutlers looking for colours that stand out from the crowd. Manufactured by compressing layers of cotton impregnated with phenolic resin at very high pressure, it has all the technical qualities of micarta canvas - strength, durability, ease of use - while offering 3 exclusive colours not found in the classic linen, jute and canvas ranges.

It's the ideal choice when you want to personalise your creations with a colour that stands out from the crowd, while retaining a reliable material with impeccable technical performance.

Technical specifications

  • Composition: 60% phenolic resin / 40% cotton fabric
  • Heat resistance: up to 210°C for 2 hours
  • Water resistance: rot-proof, non-swelling, salt water resistant
  • Hygiene: food contact certified, dishwasher safe
  • Hardness: very high, impact and abrasion resistant
  • Colours: 3 exclusive colours available

Why choose special micarta rather than another type?

micarta linen, jute and canvas cover most of the needs of craft cutlery. The micarta special exists for a simple reason: some cutlers want a specific colour that is not available in the other ranges. Mercorne has therefore developed this range to offer 3 additional colours, manufactured to the same high quality standards and with the same technical properties as the rest of the range.

The same material, the same manufacturing process, the same ease of use - just a different colour to express your style.

How do I work with micarta special sheet?

  1. Cutting - Band saw or abrasive disc. Clean cut with no splinters.
  2. Drilling - Standard HSS drills at moderate speed.
  3. Progressive sanding - From 80 grit to 400-800 grit for a satin or semi-gloss finish.
  4. Polishing - Polishing paste on felt or dremel for a mirror-like shine.
  5. Engraving - Can be carved with a dremel or chisel for unique customisations.

💡 Mercorne tip: wear an FFP2 mask when sanding. Phenolic resin dust should be avoided.

Finer pattern than jute but after polishing, there are beautiful reflections. (Translated review)
