Stabilized elm (Ulmus campestris) is a European wood with a lively grain and tormented patterns, particularly prized by knife makers for the visual richness of its grain. Weakened by graphiosis since the 1970s, elm is now mainly available in stabilized form: the vacuum-injected resin compensates for the wood's natural fragility and reveals color contrasts - from golden brown to creamy beige - that are superbly accentuated by polishing on a finished handle.
At Mercorne, stabilized elm is selected for its visual character and consistency in the workshop. Each piece is cut in France in our workshop in the Puy-de-Dôme region, with particular attention paid to the homogeneity of the stabilization. Not sure which species or format to choose? Olivier is available to help you make your technical choice.
