Elforyn®: presentation and origins

Elforyn® is a synthetic material developed in Germany as a technical and aesthetic alternative to natural ivory. It was developed in response to growing demand from craftsmen - cutlers, sculptors, luthiers - who wanted to work with a material that looked and felt like ivory, without being subject to the restrictions of the CITES convention, which strictly regulates the trade in real ivory. Elforyn® is produced by a company specializing in technical polymers, and has a certificate of conformity guaranteeing its composition. Its natural creamy-white ivory hue, lightly grained texture and polished gloss make it one of the most convincing synthetic ivories available on the market.

Properties and technical features

Elforyn® is made from high-density polyurethane, which gives it a set of properties very similar to those of natural ivory, while eliminating its fragility.

Machinability

The material can be machined using conventional cutlery tools: drilling, milling, grinding, sanding and polishing. The homogeneous composition of Elforyn® eliminates the risk of cleavage or breakage during machining, one of the main defects of natural ivory. It can also be thermoformed in boiling water, offering hot shaping possibilities.

Surface and finishes

The surface of Elforyn® is dense and even. It can be polished to a high gloss, and can also be varnished or tinted, depending on the project. Its surface hardness is comparable to that of ivory, with a warm, slightly soft feel. The material absorbs very little water, making it stable in conditions of variable humidity - a notable advantage for a knife handle destined for regular use.

Chemical resistance

Elforyn® is resistant to common cleaning agents, oils, greases, weak acids and bases. This chemical resistance makes it a suitable material for knife handles intended for kitchen or everyday use.

How to choose Elforyn® for your knife?

Elforyn® is suitable for a wide range of knife-making projects, from table knives to art knives. Here are the main criteria to consider before choosing it:

• Ivory aesthetics without CITES constraints: if the project calls for the look of natural ivory but the regulatory steps are not desired, Elforyn® is the most straightforward solution.
• Scrimshaw and engraving: the material is particularly appreciated by craftsmen practicing scrimshaw (fine engraving on ivory or similar materials). Its homogeneous surface and even hardness facilitate this type of delicate work.
• Demanding technical projects: for experienced knifemakers who require a material that is predictable during machining, with no soft spots or irregular fibers, Elforyn® is reliable and repeatable from one piece to the next.
• Kitchen knives or knives for everyday use: its resistance to moisture and cleaning agents makes it an appropriate choice for knives exposed to water.
• Beginners: Elforyn® is more forgiving than natural ivory when machined. Its homogeneous behavior reduces the risk of errors for apprentice knifemakers.

Frequently asked questions about Elforyn®

Is Elforyn® subject to CITES regulations like natural ivory?

No. Elforyn® is a synthetic material of polymer origin, with no animal components. It is not subject to any CITES restrictions and can be bought, worked and sold freely, without any special certificate or declaration.

Is it possible to scrimshaw on Elforyn®?

Yes, in fact this is one of its most widely recognized uses. The even, homogeneous surface of Elforyn® accepts scrimshaw techniques very well: point engraving, inking and polishing. The visual rendering is close to that obtained on natural ivory.

How does Elforyn® respond to sanding and polishing?

The material responds very well to progressive sanding, from coarse to very fine grit. Final polishing with paste gives a high, even sheen over the entire surface. It does not heat up excessively with a grinder if light passes are used.

Is Elforyn® stable over time?

Yes. Unlike natural ivory, which can crack with variations in humidity, Elforyn® is dimensionally stable. Its low water absorption rate enables it to withstand humidity/drought cycles without deforming or cracking.

What's the difference with stabilized bone or G10 for a knife handle?

Elforyn® is distinguished above all by its ivory aesthetic finish, which is difficult to achieve with bone or G10. Stabilized bone is more natural and less expensive, but looks different. G10 is more shock-resistant, but colder in the hand and lacks the visual appeal of ivory. Elforyn® occupies a specific niche: aesthetic ivory, with no regulatory constraints and good machinability.
