Hardness and density

How do I choose antler for a knife handle?

The choice depends first and foremost on the knife you're aiming for and the skill level of the cutter. Here are the main criteria:

• Whole antler - ideal for hunting knives, survival knives or laguioles. The natural shape is exploited as it is, with minimal shaping. Recommended for experienced knifemakers capable of working with irregular shapes.
• Rondin or tranche - sawn cross-section, easier to size and shape. Recommended for beginners or flat knives.
• Rough handle - pre-formed part, ready for adjustment and polishing. Significant time-saving in the workshop.
• Crown - serrated base of the antler. Highly decorative, used mainly for table knives or collector's items.

For machining, use sharpened carbide or HSS tools. Deer antler has few fibers, but can splinter if cut too aggressively. A mineral oil or beeswax finish preserves the material and brings out the natural hues.

Deer antler is naturally resistant to moisture, but regular care prolongs its life and preserves its appearance. Apply a thin coat of mineral oil or natural wax every six to twelve months. Avoid prolonged immersion in water or direct contact with abrasive products.

Can deer antler be sanded and polished like wood?

Yes, but with a few precautions. Deer antler sands well with increasing grit paper (80 → 220 → 400), and the finish can go as far as mirror polish on the outer cortical part. The softer, spongier heartwood absorbs finishing agents more readily: plan for a first coat of impregnation before final polishing.
