Damasteel®: origins and identity of an exceptional Swedish damascus steel

Damasteel® is a Swedish brand founded in Söderfors, Sweden, specializing in the production of stainless damascus steel by powder metallurgy (Powder Metallurgy Damascus). Unlike hand-forged damascus, the Damasteel® process combines two stainless alloys - typically RWL-34 and PMC-27 - under high pressure and temperature, creating a material with uniform mechanical properties and perfectly reproducible patterns. This precision industrial process, perfected in the 1990s, has revolutionized access to stainless damascus for the world's cutlery craftsmen.

Damasteel® properties and technical features

Damasteel® has a set of properties that clearly distinguish it from carbon damascus steels:

Corrosion resistance

The two constituent alloys (RWL-34 and PMC-27) contain high levels of chromium and molybdenum, giving the steel corrosion resistance comparable to that of common stainless steels. A Damasteel® knife will not rust under normal conditions of use, even when exposed to moisture or mild food acids.

Hardness and edge retention

After hardening and tempering, Damasteel® generally achieves a hardness of between 59 and 62 HRC, depending on the heat treatment protocol applied. This hardness ensures prolonged cutting performance, comparable to the best knife steels on the market. The wire can be sharpened with a stone or leather without any particular difficulty.

Patterns and aesthetics

Damasteel® is available in several exclusive patterns - Hakkapella, Odin's Eye, Thor's Cross, Rose, Bluetongue - some of which are unique to the brand. Each pattern is chemically etched after polishing, revealing a color contrast between the two alloys. The result is consistent from bar to bar, making it easier to plan your cutlery projects.

How to choose Damasteel® steel for a knife?

The choice of a Damasteel® bar or blade depends on several criteria:

• The pattern: some patterns like Odin's Eye are highly structured and visible on wide blades, while others like Hakkapella are suitable for all shapes. Choose according to blade size and desired visual effect.
• Delivery condition: bars are delivered in the annealed condition, at around 28-30 HRC, which facilitates shaping by machining. Heat treatment (quenching + tempering) is carried out by the cutler after shaping.
• The format: Mercorne offers raw bars for cutting and preformed blades, depending on the models available. For a first experience with Damasteel®, a preformed blade reduces the number of working steps.
• End use: Damasteel® is particularly suited to multi-purpose knives, high-end kitchen knives and collector's knives. Its rust-proofing makes it less demanding to maintain than a carbon damascus.

For beginner cutlers, we recommend starting with a preformed blade format, so as to concentrate on the finish, handle and assembly rather than on shaping the steel.

Frequently asked questions about Damasteel®

What's the difference between Damasteel® and hand-forged damascus?

Artisanal forged damascus is handmade by forge-welding sheets of carbon steel, giving it a unique character but varying properties depending on the forger. Damasteel® is produced industrially by powder metallurgy: its mechanical properties are standardized and reproducible, and its corrosion resistance is far superior. Both have their legitimacy - the choice depends on the project and the constraints of use.

Can Damasteel® be tempered at home?

Technically yes, but this requires a heat treatment furnace capable of reaching and maintaining precise temperatures (around 1,060°C for quenching, followed by tempering at 180-200°C). For optimum, reproducible results, it is advisable to entrust hardening to a heat treatment professional, especially for first-time experiments with this steel.

Is Damasteel® suitable for kitchen knives?

Yes, this is one of its most relevant applications. Its resistance to corrosion makes it compatible with damp, acidic environments (fruit, vegetables, meat). Its cutting performance is excellent. It can withstand normal knife maintenance, without the precautions of a carbon damask (oil, immediate drying). However, dishwashers are not recommended to preserve the polish and contrast of the patterns.

Can I engrave or personalize a Damasteel® blade?

Laser engraving on Damasteel® is possible after polishing and chemical etching, but it interferes with the existing pattern. Most cutlers prefer to leave the natural damascus pattern as the only decoration, and reserve personalization for the handle. Discreet engraving on the ricasso (heel of the blade), however, is still quite feasible.

Are Mercorne Damasteel® blades supplied heat-treated?

No. All bars and blades are delivered in the annealed condition (approx. 28-30 HRC), enabling the cutler to machine them. Heat treatment (quenching + tempering) is carried out by the cutler after final shaping, according to the protocol recommended by DAMASTEEL®.
