Cocobolo(Dalbergia retusa) grows in the dry and gallery forests of Central America - mainly Guatemala, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Mexico. A member of the Fabaceae family, it is closely related to rosewood and shares its remarkable grain beauty. Its local name, "grenadillo", refers to the intense color of its sapwood and heartwood. Long exploited without regulation, cocobolo is now listed in Appendix II of the CITES convention, which strictly regulates its international trade. Properties and technical characteristics

Cocobolo is one of the densest and hardest woods available for cutlery. Its density ranges from 1.00 to 1.10 g/cm³ [À VÉRIFIER], giving it excellent grip and remarkable resistance to daily abrasion. Its Janka hardness is estimated at around 2,200 lbf [À VÉRIFIER], making it a demanding material to machine but incomparable once polished.

Color and aesthetics

Cocobolo's chromatic palette is one of its most prized features: the heartwood varies from reddish-brown to bright red, sometimes with black or orange veins, while the lighter sapwood contrasts elegantly. Color evolves with exposure to light and oil - a cocobolo handle develops a patina and depth with use.

Machining behavior

Cocobolo is naturally very oily: this natural oil content makes it highly resistant to moisture and impact, but complicates gluing. It is advisable to degrease surfaces thoroughly with acetone before gluing. Its dust is a powerful allergen - a P3 mask must be worn in the workshop. On the other hand, its response to oil finishing or direct polishing is exceptional: the grain closes and the lustre obtained is deep and long-lasting.

How to choose cocobolo for your knife?

Cocobolo is particularly suited to experienced knife-makers used to working with demanding exotic woods. For beginners, its density and oily nature can complicate the process - better to start with an easier wood and return to cocobolo when the gestures are assured. Here are the criteria to consider:

• Shape and color: every piece is unique. For collector's knives, opt for boards with a nice chromatic variation, and more regular pieces for utility handles.
• Intended use: its resistance to humidity makes it a good choice for kitchen knives or hunting knives exposed to the elements.
• Blade match: Cocobolo goes particularly well with bright stainless steels and finely patterned damasks, enhancing their contrast.
• Finishing: neither wax nor varnish - oil finishing (tung oil, Danish oil) or direct polishing with cotton are the best options for revealing its natural beauty.

Is cocobolo authorized for sale in France?

Yes, as long as the pieces comply with CITES regulations (appendix II). Mercorne buys only from documented sources. Transformed parts (machined handles, cut blocks) can be sold without any particular restrictions to individuals and craftsmen in France.

Why is cocobolo difficult to glue?

Its high natural oil content creates a barrier that prevents epoxy and wood glues from bonding properly. It is essential to degrease surfaces thoroughly with solvent (acetone or isopropyl alcohol) before gluing, and to use a quality epoxy glue. Some craftsmen also lightly sand just before gluing to open the pores.

Is it really necessary to work cocobolo with a mask?

Absolutely. Cocobolo dust is a powerful allergen and can cause skin, respiratory and eye reactions, even in non-sensitized people. Wearing an FFP3 or P3 mask is strongly recommended when sawing and sanding. Good ventilation is also essential.

How do I care for a cocobolo handle?

A cocobolo handle is simply maintained with a penetrating oil (tung oil, baked linseed oil, Danish oil) applied once or twice a year. Avoid film-forming products (varnish, lacquer) that flake off over time. Cocobolo naturally develops a beautiful patina with use - the more it's used, the richer its color becomes.

What's the difference between cocobolo and rosewood?

Both belong to the Dalbergia genus and have similar properties, but cocobolo is generally more colorful and contrasting than most rosewoods. Its density is also slightly higher. Rio rosewood(Dalbergia nigra) and cocobolo are both under CITES, but the species concerned and the levels of protection differ according to the appendix.
