Cocobolo | Wood for knife handles | Mercorne

Cocobolo(Dalbergia retusa) is one of the most sought-after woods for fine cutlery. Native to Central America (Guatemala, Costa Rica, Nicaragua), it has a distinctive reddish-brown color with orange highlights, often streaked with black veins, which intensifies with age and finishing. Dense, hard and naturally oily, it takes on an exceptional polish that reveals the full richness of its grain. As its dust is allergenic, we recommend that you wear a suitable mask when working with it. Please note: cocobolo is listed in Appendix II of the CITES Convention - its marketing is subject to specific regulatory obligations.

At Mercorne, each cocobolo plank and handle is hand-selected for figure, color and consistency. Our materials have been cut in our workshop in France for 34 years, in compliance with CITES requirements. The depth of our catalog enables you to find the exact template you need, from rough cut to finished piece. Any doubts about choice or conformity? Olivier will personally answer all your questions.
