Morta: origins and history of an extraordinary wood

Morta is a subfossil wood extracted mainly from the peat bogs of the British Isles - led by Ireland and Scotland - and Northern Europe. These oaks (mainly Quercus robur and Quercus petraea) were felled by storms or floods between 3,000 and 10,000 years ago, then immersed in peat bogs whose anaerobic conditions interrupted their decomposition. The term "morta" comes from the Irish, where it refers to blackened wood drawn from the depths. Unlike petrified wood, whose cells are entirely replaced by minerals, morta retains its original woody structure: it's preserved wood, not stone.

The density of raw morta is variable, around 0.65 to 0.80 g/cm³ [À VÉRIFIER selon les lots], but stabilization homogenizes this value and fills in micro-cracks and areas weakened by millennia of immersion. The material works well with conventional tools: sawing, milling, sanding up to 2,000 grit. It responds particularly well to polishing with wax or finishing oil, revealing a remarkable depth of color. Its resistance after stabilization is comparable to that of a good-quality tropical hardwood.

The tannins concentrated by the peat bog give morta a very high level of natural rot-proofing - an invaluable property for a knife handle exposed to water and repeated handling.

What's the difference between morta and petrified wood?

Petrified wood has had its cells entirely replaced by minerals: it's literally stone. Morta, on the other hand, retains its original woody structure - its cells are preserved by the tannins in the peat bog. It remains a wood, denser and darker than normal, but machinable as such.

Is stabilization always necessary when working with morta?

Not systematically, but it is strongly recommended. Raw morta may have micro-cracks or areas of irregular density resulting from its geological history. Stabilization under vacuum and resin ensures far greater mechanical homogeneity and resistance to humidity, which is essential for everyday use.

Is stabilized morta difficult to polish?

No. In fact, it's one of its greatest assets. Progressing from 240 grit to 2,000 grit, then applying a finishing wax or oil, morta reveals a depth of color and reflections reminiscent of ebony. Polishing with burlap or a soft cloth is all that's required to obtain a glossy or satin finish, depending on preference.
