Its common name "cade" comes from the Provençal language, and it is sometimes confused with other juniper species - but Juniperus oxycedrus is distinguished by its two white stripes of berries and the particular quality of its wood. Cade wood has an ideal technical profile for fine cutlery. Its density, between 0.75 and 0.90 g/cm³, makes it a heavy, resistant wood, comparable to dense oak. Its compact cell structure and interwoven fibers give it excellent resistance to impact and humidity, as well as appreciable dimensional stability once properly dried.

Color and visual appearance

One of the most sought-after characteristics of cade is its natural color palette. The heartwood varies from bright orange to reddish brown, sometimes tinged with purplish or purple nuances on the oldest pieces. The lighter sapwood creates a striking natural contrast. Pieces with a burr pattern - tight undulations originating from the base or outgrowths of the tree - are particularly prized for their unique appearance and decorative dimension.

Machining behaviour

Cade works well with sharp tools, but requires sharpened blades due to its hardness. It sands and polishes remarkably well, gradually revealing its warm reflections. Its slightly resinous odor, pleasant in the workshop, disappears after finishing. It accepts penetrating oils and natural waxes without particular difficulty.

How do I care for a cade wood handle?

Technically yes, but unstabilized natural cade is already dense enough for most cutlery applications. Does cade have a persistent odor on the finished handle?

The resinous odor characteristic of raw cade disappears after fine sanding and finishing. Once the handle has been sanded to 400 or 600 grit and oiled, there is no perceptible odor left. It's only when working in the workshop that you'll appreciate its pleasantly woody, resinous fragrance.
