Custom cutting of noble materials: a specialist skill
Not all handle materials are cut the same way. A stabilised wood requires a different approach from a buffalo horn or a mammoth molar. Custom cutting of noble materials combines knowledge of the materials, machine expertise and attention to detail. A poor cutting angle, an unsuitable speed or the wrong blade can compromise the integrity of a unique — sometimes irreplaceable — piece.
This is exactly why Mercorne has offered a custom sawing service for over 34 years. Cutting materials for knifemaking is our daily work.
Materials we cut
Our custom cutting service covers all noble materials in our catalogue, as well as pieces brought in by knifemakers:
- Stabilised woods (maple, birch, walnut burl, hazel, etc.)
- Horns and tusks (buffalo horn, ram horn, warthog tusk, zebu horn)
- Fossil mammoth ivory — pieces compliant with CITES regulations
- Premium synthetic materials (Raffir, G10, carbon fibre)
- Natural bone and Raffir dinosaur bone
- Mother of pearl, abalone and marine materials
Whatever the nature or shape of the piece, we assess the best approach before proceeding. Irregular, curved or small-sized materials are a speciality of our workshop.
Mercorne workshop equipment
Our cutting workshop is equipped with two complementary machines, selected for their precision and adaptability to noble materials:
- Circular saw: ideal for clean, straight and precise cuts on wood, composite materials and certain bones. Ensures consistent thickness and a neat finish.
- Band saw: essential for irregular materials, curved horns, tusks and pieces with complex geometry. Allows the natural curves of the material to be followed and the most rewarding cutting axis to be found.
The choice of machine and blade is made case by case, according to the nature of the material, its thickness and the desired finish.
Why entrust your cutting to Mercorne?
Cutting a noble material is not merely a mechanical operation. It is a reading of the material. At Mercorne, each piece is studied before being placed under the blade. The aim: to identify the cutting point that will best reveal the aesthetic qualities of the material — its grain, patterns, internal colours — while preserving its integrity.
This eye for selection, developed over 34 years of daily handling of rare materials, makes the difference on high-value pieces. The value of a material is not only its purchase cost: it is also its rarity, its uniqueness, the latent beauty that a well-placed cut can reveal — or that a mistake can destroy.

Frequently asked questions about our cutting service
Can I send my own materials to be cut?
Yes. We accept pieces brought in by knifemakers, subject to compatibility with our equipment. Please contact us beforehand to confirm feasibility and discuss shipping arrangements.
What dimensions can I order?
There is no standard format: every cut is made to your specifications. Let us know the desired dimensions (length, width, thickness) and the material concerned — we will assess what is achievable.
Do you cut all materials in your catalogue?
The vast majority of materials in the Mercorne catalogue can be custom cut. Some very fragile or very small pieces may require prior assessment. If in doubt, a simple message is all it takes.
How is the cutting price calculated?
The price varies according to the material, the complexity of the cut and the number of pieces. We provide a quote on request, with no obligation. Contact us by email or phone for a prompt response.
Is cutting fossil mammoth ivory permitted?
Fossil mammoth ivory is not subject to CITES regulations (the species is extinct and is not covered by international commercial protection). Mercorne has the expertise and equipment to cut this material while preserving its integrity. All our mammoth ivory pieces comply with applicable regulations.
