What's the difference between raw palm and stabilized palm?

Raw palm, in its natural form, is porous and sometimes dimensionally unstable: it can split or warp under the effect of humidity or heat. Stabilized palm has undergone a vacuum resin impregnation that fills the pores, reinforces the structure and eliminates these risks. For a knife handle intended for regular use, stabilized palm is therefore strongly recommended over untreated palm.

Is stabilized palmetto difficult to machine?

Stabilized palmwood is accessible to knifemakers accustomed to hard exotic woods. Its longitudinal fibers can tear if tools are not perfectly sharpened or if cutting speed is too high. Carbide tools, moderate speed and progressive sanding (from 80 to 600 grit minimum) give very good results. Palm polishes well and reveals its fiber spectacularly from 400 grit upwards.

Is it possible to stain or change the color of a natural stabilized palm?
