Gabonese ebony: origins and identity

Diospyros crassiflora is a forest species from equatorial Africa, found mainly in Gabon, Cameroon and the Republic of Congo. It belongs to the Ebenaceae family, which includes the true black ebony trees. The tree grows slowly in dense forests, which explains the remarkable density of its wood and the concentration of its fibers. Its commercial name, Gabon ebony, distinguishes it from Macassar or Ceylon ebony, which have contrasting veins. Here, the shade is black, deep and even - it's this evenness that makes it a benchmark material for handcrafting.

Properties and technical characteristics

Gabonese ebony is one of the densest and hardest woods in the world. It has a high density (between 0.90 and 1.05 g/cm³ depending on the source), giving it an immediately perceptible weight in the hand and superior mechanical strength.

Color and appearance

Perfect wood (heartwood) is an intense, uniform black with virtually no visible veins. The sapwood, on the other hand, is white or cream - cutlery pieces are always made from the heartwood. The very fine grain provides a polished surface that rivals lacquer.

Machining behaviour

Gabonese ebony is a technically demanding wood. Its hardness quickly wears out non-carbide tools. It tends to split if drilling is not carried out slowly, with lubrication. Once shaped, it accepts oil or wax finishes very well, and generally requires no additional surface treatment. Its low shrinkage makes it stable once properly dried.

How to choose Gabonese ebony for your knife?

Gabonese ebony is suitable for a wide range of projects, provided you adapt your working methods to its hardness.

• Prestigious knives and collector's items: this is where Gabonese ebony excels. Its black color and mirror polish make it the material of choice for handles with a strong visual impact.
• Table knives: resistance to temporary humidity is good, but prolonged contact with water is not recommended, as is the case for all dense, non-stabilized woods.
• Beginner knifemakers: this wood is not recommended for first-time knifemakers because of its splitting behavior. Prefer more tolerant species first, then return to ebony with the appropriate tools and gestures.
• Experienced knifemakers: Gabonese ebony offers a reward equal to the technical demands. Epoxy resin joints are preferable to conventional glues on this very smooth wood.

Is Gabonese ebony a protected or regulated wood?

Diospyros crassiflora has been listed in Appendix II of CITES since 2017, which implies export controls from the countries of origin. The batches marketed by Mercorne are accompanied by the required traceability documents and comply with the regulations in force. As a buyer in France, you don't need to take any particular steps.

How can I prevent ebony from splitting during drilling?

Use a sharp carbide bit, reduce the rotation speed and drill in several progressive passes. A light deposit of beeswax on the drill bit reduces friction. Avoid lateral movements at the end of drilling, which are the main cause of splitting on this wood.

What finish do you recommend for a Gabonese ebony handle?

Gabonese ebony often requires only a gradual polishing (to at least 1,200 grain, then 2,000) followed by an application of tung oil or microcrystalline wax. The wood is naturally very dark and shiny - adding a varnish is rarely relevant and may even harm the final appearance.

Can Gabonese ebony be stabilized?

Resin stabilization is technically possible, but rarely practiced on Gabonese ebony: its very high density limits deep impregnation, and its natural stability is already excellent. In contrast to porous or soft woods, this operation does not bring any significant benefits.

What's the difference between Gabonese ebony and Macassar ebony?
