Gold (18 or 24 carats depending on the reference) and solid silver offer a distinctive warm or cool sheen. These metals are soft and easy to work with file and paper, but sensitive to deep scratches - they require a careful finish. Silver may darken slightly over time in contact with air; a gentle polish is all that's needed to restore its lustre.

Brass and gilded metals

Brass - an alloy of copper and zinc - is more affordable and has a warm golden color much appreciated in traditional cutlery. It is harder than pure gold, making it easier to shape and sand. Brass can be patinated or left unfinished, depending on the desired effect.

Which glue should I use to install a metal inclusion in a handle?

Two-component epoxy resins (such as Araldite or equivalent) give the best results on metals. Carefully degrease the metal surface with acetone before gluing. For inclusions embedded in the sleeve resin, no glue is required - the inclusion is held mechanically by the polymerized resin.

Is the gold used solid or plated?

Silver naturally oxidizes in contact with air and humidity. To slow down this phenomenon, apply a thin layer of beeswax or a protective varnish after finishing the handle. In the event of tarnishing, a gentle silver polish is all that's needed to restore the original shine without damaging the handle.

Are metal inclusions compatible with all handle types?

Yes, provided you adapt the installation technique. On natural or stabilized wood: mill a precise recess and glue in place. On cast resin: embed before polymerization. On horn or bone: epoxy gluing under pressure during setting. Avoid high-humidity handles (unstabilized wood), which can work and loosen the inclusion over time.
