Arizona ironwood(Olneya tesota), also known as palo fierro, is one of the densest woods in existence - it sinks in water. Native to the Sonora desert between Arizona and Mexico, it grows slowly over several centuries in extreme conditions, giving its fiber remarkable compactness and strength. Its naturally dark color, enhanced by contrasting brown and purplish veins, makes it instantly recognizable on a handcrafted knife handle.
At Mercorne, the selection of Arizona ironwood is rigorous: each piece is chosen for the quality of its grain, the absence of cracks and the evenness of its color. The materials are cut in our workshop in France, in formats adapted to cutlery - plates, bars, semi-finished handles. Not sure which format or finish is right for your project? Olivier will answer you directly.
