The sambar deer (Rusa unicolor) is the largest deer in Asia, found in the dense forests of India, Sri Lanka, Southeast Asia, and southern China. Its antlers—massive, dense, and with a distinctive texture—make it one of the most sought-after materials in artisanal cutlery. Sambar deer antler is distinguished by its high hardness, its warm brown hue with ochre highlights, and its unique natural patterns resulting from the porous structure of the antler. Each piece is different, making it a living material prized by experienced knife makers.
At Mercorne, we offer a selection of sambar deer antler in various forms: carved handles, whole antlers, logs, and crowns. Each piece is selected for its density, uniformity, and how it takes a finish. Cut in our workshop in France, they are ready for machining. Not sure which one to choose? Olivier is here to answer all your technical questions.
