Stabilized chestnut is a familiar European wood -Aesculus hippocastanum - transformed by resin impregnation to become a handle material that is both strong, stable and visually striking. Its naturally light-colored fiber takes on deep hues and sharp contrasts under the resin that raw wood cannot offer. At Mercorne, stabilization is carried out in France, using off-cuts of planted chestnut veneer - a selected, non-wild raw material with controlled traceability.
Each piece of stabilized chestnut offered in this catalog is processed in our workshop. Its resistance to humidity, dimensional stability and ease of machining make it a popular choice for both experienced knifemakers and enthusiasts new to handle making. Not sure which reference or finish is right for your project? Olivier can personally answer all your technical questions.
