The metal grid can slightly accelerate abrasive wear - use slightly more abrasive belts than for simple resin. Edges finish cleanly, without splintering, provided you don't force the feed.

Stability and maintenance

The material is unaffected by humidity and temperature variations common in the workshop. Unlike unstabilized wood, it does not swell or warp over time. Simple cleaning with water is sufficient for routine maintenance. An application of wax or mineral oil can be used to revive the polished appearance of the finished handle.

The choice of a honeycomb handle is based primarily on two criteria: the desired visual effect and the knife for which it is intended.

Does honeycomb really contain metal?

Is honeycomb difficult to drill or groove for the ferrule?

No. The resin can be easily drilled with a standard wood or metal drill. The internal grid offers no particular resistance. We recommend drilling at moderate speed and without forcing, to avoid heating the resin at the edge of the hole.

Can a honeycomb handle be bonded with conventional epoxy resin?

Yes, conventional two-component epoxy resins adhere perfectly to the sanded honeycomb surface. A light degreasing with acetone before bonding improves adhesion. Setting time is identical to that for standard resin bonding.

Does the honeycomb pattern wear over time?

No. Unlike some painted or printed materials, the honeycomb pattern is intrinsic to the structure of the material: it runs through the entire thickness of the part. It doesn't fade with use, nor does it fade with ordinary heat or humidity.

What finish do you recommend for a honeycomb handle?

A shagreen finish (400 to 600 grit) is the most common and strongest for everyday use. For a high-gloss finish, felt polishing with a resin polishing paste gives excellent results. Avoid strong solvent-based varnishes, which may slightly opacify the resin surface.
