Properties and technical characteristics

Walnut has a density of between 0.60 and 0.70 g/cm³, making it a medium-heavy wood, comfortable in the hand without being heavy on the blade. Its hardness gives it good resistance to knocks and scratches, while remaining accessible to hand tools. Its color ranges from chocolate-brown to ash-gray, with dark veins or flames that vary according to provenance and cutting section.

Stabilization - why and how

Stabilization involves vacuum-impregnating the wood with a thermosetting synthetic resin, either colorless or colored. The process eliminates residual moisture and fills porous fibers. The result: the wood no longer swells or cracks, and becomes impervious to fingerprints, blade oils and climatic variations. For walnut, stabilization also reveals grain contrasts - partridge-eye patterns or bluish veins stand out clearly after impregnation.

How do I choose stabilized walnut for my knife?

The choice depends on the intended use and the level of finish required:

• Kitchen or table knives: choose a regular-grain, natural or smoked color, polished to a fine grain for a satin finish.
• Hunting or trekking knife: a denser, slightly ridged piece will withstand outdoor conditions better, thanks to the waterproofing provided by stabilization.
• Collector's item or gift: opt for a magnifying glass or a fork - walnut's tormented figures are particularly spectacular when stabilized and stained.
• Beginners: stabilized walnut is one of the most forgiving woods to machine; it cuts, files and sands without surprises, and has little clipping.

Frequently asked questions about stabilized walnut

What's the difference between natural walnut and stabilized walnut?

Natural walnut can deform slightly under the effect of humidity or heat, which poses a problem on knife handles regularly exposed to water. Stabilized walnut has been impregnated with resin, making it dimensionally stable, waterproof and more homogeneous when machined - while retaining the look and feel of natural wood.

Can stabilized walnut be stained or colored?

Yes, the impregnating resin can be tinted before firing, allowing you to obtain bluish, green, orange or black parts while preserving the natural walnut grain visible through the glass. Does stabilized walnut require any special surface treatment?

No. Unlike natural wood, stabilized walnut does not require an oil finish for protection. Progressive sanding to 2,000 grit followed by cloth buffing is all that's needed to achieve a deep gloss. A microcrystalline wax can be applied to amplify the shine without altering the wood's stability.

Is stabilized walnut suitable for kitchen knives?

Yes, in fact it's one of its strong points. Stain- and water-resistant, stabilized walnut withstands damp kitchen environments far better than natural wood. However, it is advisable to avoid the dishwasher and prolonged immersion, which can alter the resin over the long term.
