Forged blades represent the pinnacle of master blacksmiths’ craftsmanship: each piece is worked while hot, reforging the metal grain by grain to achieve a unique crystalline structure. Whether made of carbon steel, stainless steel, or laminated Damascus steel, a forged blade stands out for its strength, its ability to hold an edge, and the unmistakable visual character that only the forging process can impart.
At Mercorne, every forged blade is selected from renowned blacksmiths—both French and international—whose work meets our quality standards. They are offered with the blade exposed, sharpened, and deburred, ready to be mounted on the handle of your choice. Need advice on pairing a blade with a handle? Olivier personally answers all your technical questions.

Forging is one of the oldest metalworking techniques. Unlike blades cut from standardized rolled steel, a forged blade is shaped while hot through successive strikes that align the steel’s grain in the longitudinal direction. This process, practiced for millennia around the world, gives the blade superior mechanical properties compared to a simply machined part. The blacksmith controls the temperature, pressure, and pace to achieve precise geometry and a homogeneous internal structure. The result: a living blade, each one bearing the signature of its creator.
A forged blade stands out in several key ways:
The choice of a forged blade depends on the project you have in mind and your level of experience with knife-making:
If you have any questions, feel free to contact us: Olivier can advise you on the blade-handle combination best suited to your project.
For 34 years, Mercorne has selected its forged blades with the same high standards as its handle materials: each piece is evaluated for its metallurgical qualities, geometry, and finish before being added to our catalog. We work with established blacksmiths—both French and international—whose consistent production ensures uniform quality order after order. The blades are stored and shipped from our workshop in France, with careful packaging to prevent any damage to the cutting edge. Same-day shipping (for orders placed before noon), returns accepted within 15 days, free shipping on orders of €90 or more.
A forged blade is shaped while hot by a blacksmith, which reorganizes the metal’s internal structure and improves its mechanical properties. A machined blade (or “stock removal” blade) is produced by grinding the desired shape from a bar or sheet of rolled steel without any prior forging. Both techniques produce very high-quality blades, but forging offers a visual signature and geometric customization that cannot be replicated through machining alone.
Yes. All blades in our catalog are delivered with the pattern revealed (the metal is cleaned and the damask or steel pattern is highlighted), sharpened, and deburred. All you need to do is attach them to your handle and make any final edge adjustments as needed for your intended use.
Yes, in the vast majority of cases. The only technical consideration is adapting the tang (length and thickness) to the material chosen for the handle. Stabilized wood, synthetic materials, horn, bone, or resins all work well with the blades in our selection. For special projects, Olivier can guide you toward the most suitable combination.
Carbon steel is prone to rust if left damp. After use, wipe the blade thoroughly and apply a thin layer of mineral oil or camellia oil. A patina will form naturally over time, providing additional protection. Avoid very humid environments or prolonged immersion in water.
Our catalog features only in-stock blades, selected from our partner blacksmiths. We do not offer a custom forging service. However, the diversity of our selection—in terms of length, profile, and steel—allows us to accommodate most knife-making projects. Please contact us if you have specific requirements.
