Resistance and machining behaviour

Although fragile in their raw state, these materials offer good resistance once properly assembled. They can be worked with a band saw or diamond disc, maintaining water cooling to avoid overheating. Progressive sanding (from 240 to 2,000) reveals their natural shine without the need for any special finishing product. White mother-of-pearl, black mother-of-pearl, abalone: what are the differences?

White mother-of-pearl has a light, slightly pink or silvery sheen, which goes equally well with stainless steel and damascus steel blades. Black mother-of-pearl (mainly from the black Polynesian pearl oyster) offers more intense green and golden reflections on a dark background. Natural abalone is distinguished by a very pronounced palette of blues, greens and purples - reconstituted versions achieve a similar effect at lower cost, with a more uniform thickness and format.

How to choose mineral materials for knife handles?

The choice depends both on the desired visual rendering and the level of mastery in the workshop. Here are the essential criteria:

• Knife use: mineral materials are suitable for collector's knives, table knives and art pieces. They are not recommended for work knives subject to repeated shocks.
• Size of piece: for a first handle in mother-of-pearl or abalone, ready-to-use pellets facilitate processing and limit material waste.
• Blade matching: white mother-of-pearl is a natural match for mirror-polished blades; black mother-of-pearl and abalone go very well with contrasting damascus steels.
• Budget: reconstituted versions (reconstituted abalone, reconstituted mother-of-pearl) offer a rendering very close to natural versions at a more affordable price, with the advantage of perfectly homogeneous thickness.

Is mother-of-pearl strong enough for knife handles?

Yes, provided it is used on knives that are not subjected to violent shocks. Mother-of-pearl is a relatively hard material (between 2.5 and 4 on the Mohs scale), but sensitive to direct impact. Mounted on a reinforcing plate or inserted as an inlay, it offers excellent durability for a table knife, collector's knife or art piece.

What's the difference between natural and reconstituted abalone?

Natural abalone is cut directly from the abalone shell: each piece is unique, with natural variations in color and thickness. Reconstituted abalone is made from resin-bonded shell powder, offering a uniform thickness and a highly homogeneous finish - ideal for regular inlays or mass production.

How do I glue mother-of-pearl onto a handle?

A two-component epoxy glue is recommended for fixing mother-of-pearl or abalone to wood or metal. The support surface must be clean, degreased and slightly rough. Gentle clamping during polymerization is all that's needed - avoid over-tightening, which may crack the insert.

Can I sand and polish mother-of-pearl myself?

Yes, sanding is done progressively with water (240, 400, 800, 1,200, 2,000 grit), avoiding heat. Finishing with buff or polishing paste reveals the natural orientation of the material. No aggressive chemicals are used - a simple mechanical polish is all that's needed to achieve a deep gloss.

Are Mercorne mineral materials subject to CITES restrictions?

No. Mother-of-pearl and abalone are not CITES-listed species. They can be freely bought, worked and resold without any particular regulations.
