Preserved reindeer fossils (Rangifer tarandus) are an exceptional material found in Pleistocene sedimentary layers, dating from 12,000 to 2.58 million years ago. Harvested without hunting by specialized researchers, these fossils are then stabilized in Denmark by the company Raffir: the resin penetrates the ancient fibers to strengthen them, reveal their natural colors, and ensure their longevity in the workshop.
At Mercorne, Raffir’s official and exclusive distributor in France, each piece of stabilized reindeer fossil is selected for its quality and integrity. With eight items in our catalog, cut to size in our workshop in France, you have a carefully curated selection for truly unique knife handles. Olivier is available to provide personalized technical advice.

The reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) is a member of the deer family native to the Arctic and subarctic regions of Europe, Asia, and North America, where it is also known as caribou. Although the species still exists today, it has nevertheless left a remarkable fossil record in Pleistocene sediments — the geological period spanning from 2.58 million years ago to approximately 12,000 years before J.-C. The fossils offered by Mercorne come from sites excavated by specialized researchers, with no hunting or collection of living animals involved. They bear witness to an ancient fauna that became extinct as a result of the great ice ages.
In its raw state, a reindeer fossil has a partially mineralized bony or horny structure that is often fragile and irregular. Stabilization by Raffir—a Danish specialist renowned for its composite materials and fossils—involves vacuum-impregnating these pieces with a thermosetting acrylic resin. The result is a consolidated, machinable material that displays hues ranging from beige to deep brown, sometimes interspersed with gray or golden tones depending on the minerals present in the original sediment.
The stabilized reindeer fossil can be worked like dense wood: sawing, milling, drilling, and polishing are all performed using standard cutlery tools. The stabilization resin eliminates the fossil’s natural porosity and ensures a uniform finish that is resistant to moisture and hand oils.
Stabilized fossil reindeer antler is suitable for projects where the material’s uniqueness takes precedence over standardization. Each piece is unique in its hues, structure, and mineral inclusions. Here are a few criteria to consider before choosing:

For any questions about compatibility with your project or available sizes, Olivier will respond personally.
The fossils come from sedimentary deposits dating back to the Pleistocene epoch (up to 2.58 million years ago). They are collected by researchers specializing in fossil extraction, without hunting or taking specimens from living animals. No CITES regulations apply to these specimens, unlike mammoth ivory or other protected materials.
Yes. The acrylic resin used by Raffir hardens deeply when exposed to heat. Once stabilized, the fossil is resistant to moisture, moderate impacts, and body oils. Like any natural material, it benefits from occasional maintenance with wax or oil to preserve its appearance.
Compared to mammoth ivory or mammoth rib, fossil reindeer has a more fibrous structure and generally lighter hues. Compared to fossil deer, fossil reindeer has a slightly different texture due to its morphology. Each fossil material is unique; feel free to contact Olivier to compare the available pieces based on your project.
Yes. Mercorne is the official and sole distributor in France of Raffir products, including stabilized fossil reindeer. This exclusivity guarantees the authenticity of the pieces and ensures you have a direct technical contact for any questions about the material.
