Downy birch(Betula pubescens) is one of the Nordic woods most appreciated by knife makers for the quality of its fiber and the beauty of its burls and bevels. Native to Northern Europe - Finland, Scandinavia, Carinthia - it has a fine, even grain, a color ranging from creamy white to mottled brown, and excellent shaping and polishing properties. The "madré" wood from twisted trunks and burls is the most sought-after: brown-veined on a light background, it produces a striking visual effect, particularly appreciated in veneers and knife handles.
At Mercorne, each piece of birch has been hand-selected for 34 years for its figure quality and the homogeneity of its fiber. Our materials are cut in our workshop in France, guaranteeing a clean cut and consistent dimensions with every order. Are you hesitating between natural birch and stabilized birch? Olivier can personally answer all your technical questions.
