Density and strength

Dense woods - ebony, boxwood, padouk - offer excellent resistance to shock and humidity. They are ideal for knives for everyday use and for long-lasting pieces. Lighter woods such as birch or basswood are easier to work with, and ideal for creations where lightness is a priority.

Grain and visual appearance

Wood grain - fine, medium or coarse - determines the final appearance after polishing. A fine grain gives a satin-finish appearance of the highest quality. Figured woods (burr, flamed, fluted) present unique natural patterns that enhance each piece. Color ranges from the creamy whites of maple to the deep blacks of ebony, the reds of padauk and the warm browns of walnut.

Machining behaviour

Some species are easy to work with right from the start - birch, walnut, pear. Others, such as ebony or boxwood, require well-honed tools and more advanced skills. It's important to take this criterion into account, depending on your skill level and workshop equipment.

How do I choose the right wood species for a knife handle?

The choice of wood species depends on several criteria:

• The knife's intended use: an everyday kitchen knife requires a dense, moisture-resistant wood; a collector's knife can afford a visually spectacular, more fragile wood.
• The cutler's skill level: beginners benefit from starting with docile woods (walnut, birch, olive). Hard woods such as ebony or boxwood reward more advanced skills.
• Aesthetics: color, grain, pattern or uniformity. A burr walnut handle is not the same as a smooth ebony handle - both have their supporters.
• Compatibility with the blade: a light wood will enhance a damascus blade; a dark wood will provide a strong contrast with polished stainless steel.

A block is a rough piece of wood that you cut yourself into the desired shape. A matched handle comes in two pre-formed pieces selected to match visually - same grain, same color. It's the ideal solution for saving time and ensuring consistent results on both sides of the knife.

How well does natural wood resist humidity?

That depends on the species. Some dense, oily woods - such as olive or teak - stand up well to occasional dampness. Others are more porous and require a finish (oil, wax, varnish) to protect the handle over time. For kitchen knives, prefer dense or stabilized woods. Is it possible to buy natural wood in small quantities?

How do I maintain a natural wood handle?

For most species, regular soaking in linseed oil or edible mineral oil is sufficient. Avoid prolonged soaking in water or direct exposure to heat. A well-maintained handle gains depth of color and can last for decades.
