Description

Over 10,000 years ago, the woolly mammoth was still treading the frozen plains of Siberia. Today, a fragment of its tusk - the inner pulp, impregnated with beige resin in the Mercorne workshop - becomes the handle of an art knife. A timeless material, for a blade that will last for generations.

Mammoth ivory pulp (Mammuthus primigenius) is the inner, honeycombed tusk of the woolly mammoth, a species that became extinct over 10,000 years ago. Extracted from the Siberian permafrost, this fossil material has a spongy structure with beige and cream hues. Mercorne impregnates the core with a beige resin using a vacuum impregnation process, filling each cell to obtain a dense, homogeneous and mechanically solid material, suitable for all types of cutlery.

Stabilized mammoth ivory pulp is machined with conventional woodworking tools: saw, sander, file. Its impregnating resin gives it excellent stability and easy polishing to 2000 grit. This handle is composed of 2 matched inserts: the pattern on insert 1 corresponds exactly to that on insert 2. The price shown is for the complete handle (2 inserts). You will receive exactly the handle pictured. Mercorne, a specialist in France for 34 years, selects and stabilizes each specimen in its own workshop.

We have specialized in materials for knife handles since 1992.
