Each deer antler is an irreplaceable piece - its hues, veins and relief are never repeated. This log and crown set features a unique specimen of European stag with a strong personality, and you'll receive exactly the parts you photographed.
European stag antler (Cervus elaphus) is one of the oldest and most distinctive handle materials in traditional cutlery. Its structure consists of a dense, resistant cortex on the periphery, and a lighter, spongy core in the center. Shades range from luminous beige to warm brown, sometimes with hints of gold, depending on the area from which the cutlery was harvested and the age of the animal. Each piece has its own ribs, grooves and natural reliefs - no two logs or crowns are alike.
In cutlery, logs are prized for their natural cylindrical profile, ideal for rustic, traditional or hunting handles. The crown, the basal part of the wood with the most pronounced relief, offers a raw character much sought-after for sculptural handles with strong character. The whole can be easily worked with conventional woodworking tools: saw, rasp, sandpaper down to the finest grain for a satin polish. Mercorne has been selecting its deer antlers for 34 years, for the integrity of the cortex and the natural beauty of each piece.
