Beech burl is one of the most graphic variants of this European species: its swirls of fibers catch the light and give each handle a unique visual character, impossible to reproduce industrially.
Scientific name: Fagus sylvatica. Beech is a common European wood, but the burr - the growth that forms on the trunk or roots - is much rarer. It features a disorganized grain, swirling patterns and shades ranging from light honey to deep brown, sometimes with darker scalded areas. Its original density (0.70 to 0.75) is enhanced by Mercorne stabilization: a resin-impregnated core, using an odorless, high-impregnation recipe improved since 2020.
In cutlery, stabilized beech burl offers the best of both worlds: the natural pattern of wood and the mechanical stability of a composite. It is easily sawn, machined and sanded with conventional woodworking tools, then polished to a shine that reveals all its patterns. This handle is made up of 2 matched inserts: the pattern on insert 1 corresponds exactly to that on insert 2. The price indicated is for the complete handle (2 plates). Mercorne has been selecting and stabilizing these magnifiers in its workshop in France for 34 years, with recognized expertise in fine cutlery.
We have specialized in materials for knife handles since 1992.
