The micarta canvas plate: the choice of demanding cutlers

Mercorne's micarta canvas sheet is manufactured by compressing layers of canvas cotton impregnated with phenolic resin at very high pressure. This industrial process produces a composite material of exceptional density and homogeneity, favoured by professional and amateur knifemakers alike for the manufacture of hunting, outdoor and collector's knife handles.

With its tight, even cotton weave, micarta canvas offers the most uniform, easy-to-finish surface in the entire Mercorne range. It's the natural choice for high-end designs and meticulous finishing.

Technical specifications

  • Composition: 60% phenolic resin / 40% cotton canvas fabric
  • Heat resistance: up to 210°C for 2 hours
  • Water resistance: rot-proof, non-swelling, salt water resistant
  • Dishwasher safe
  • Hardness: very high, impact and abrasion resistant

Why canvas rather than linen or jute?

micarta canvas is characterised by its very tight, regular grain, giving it a homogenous surface that's ideal for precise finishes. Unlike jute (with its rustic, pronounced grain) or linen (with its visible natural texture), canvas gives a contemporary, uncluttered look that is highly sought-after for tactical, hunting and collector's knives.

How to work with micarta canvas?

  1. Cutting - Band saw or abrasive disc. The cut is clean and splinter-free.
  2. Drilling - HSS drills at moderate speed to avoid overheating the resin.
  3. Sanding - From 80 grit to 400 or 800 grit for a satin or semi-gloss finish.
  4. Polishing - Polishing paste on felt or dremel to obtain the mirror-like shine characteristic of canvas.
  5. Engraving - Can be sculpted and engraved with a dremel or burin for unique customisations.

💡 Mercorne tip: wear an FFP2 mask when sanding. Phenolic resin dust should be avoided.
