At the heart of our workshops in Langogne, Lozère, we took on a technical challenge that few craftsmen attempt: stabilize a whole pine cone, standing upright, and freeze it in a high-performance resin to reveal a honeycomb pattern that no one had yet showcased in cutlery. The Inclusion Pigne de Pin "Debout" was born of this exploration: a block in which the French forest is revealed from an unprecedented angle, vertically, like a geological cross-section of the plant kingdom.
The pine cone used comes from French forests, selected for the regularity of its scales and its maturity. Once harvested, it enters our exclusive vacuum stabilization process: the resin penetrates every fiber, every cell, right to the heart of the pine cone. This stage is decisive. It transforms a fragile, rot-resistant plant element into a dense, stable material, ready to be worked like a precious wood. The stabilized log is then positioned vertically in a mold, then embedded in a high-performance tinted resin - khaki, orange, blue, green, yellow or apple green - to reveal the contrasting natural geometry of the scales. Each block is unique: no two lugs have the same shape, and no honeycomb pattern can be reproduced.
For the cutler, woodturner or jeweller, this material opens up a rare playground. It's easy to machine thanks to stabilization: progressive sanding to 2000 grain, easy mirror polishing, excellent drill and band-saw resistance. The contrast between the rough texture of the pine wood and the crystalline clarity of the resin creates a striking visual effect that instantly enhances a blade. The six colors are designed to match contemporary knives as well as Scandinavian and outdoor-inspired pieces. Format 125 × 35 × 6 mm: the ideal size for handle inserts, but also for cabochons, jewelry medallions or small turned pieces.
This vertical inclusion is a Mercorne creation. From the selection of the pine in the forest to the final casting, each stage is carried out in Langogne, under the direct control of our workshop. This is our way of defending living French cutlery: a material designed, manufactured and traced in the same place, by craftsmen who know every detail. You'll receive exactly the block photographed for the shade you've chosen - no two blades are alike.
Frequently asked questions
Is stabilized pinewood solid once machined?
Yes. The vacuum stabilization process impregnates each fiber and cell with resin, making the block dense, stable and rot-proof. You can drill, sand and polish it like precious wood, without the risk of splintering.
What's the difference with a conventional pin inclusion?
With conventional inclusions, the pin is laid flat or in sections. Here, we've positioned it vertically to reveal the full honeycomb pattern - a geometric effect impossible to achieve otherwise, and one you won't find on any other block on the market.
Does the color of the resin vary from one block to the next?
Very slightly, yes. Each casting is handmade, and each stone absorbs the resin differently. The color remains true to the advertised shade, but the intensity may vary according to the density of the stone. This is the hallmark of 100% workshop production.
What is the recommended use?
The 125 × 35 × 6 mm format is calibrated for knife handle inserts (hunting, cooking, EDC). It is also suitable for art turning, jewelry and any creation requiring a visually striking, easy-to-work material.
Where does the pine cone used come from?
French forests. Harvesting, selection and the entire transformation process are carried out in our workshop in Langogne, Lozère. This guarantees total traceability and 100% made-in-France expertise.
Is the block easy to polish?
Yes. The resin and stabilized pine can be sanded to 2000 grain without difficulty, then polished to a mirror finish with a standard paste. The contrast between the pine wood and the resin intensifies as polishing progresses.
