RockBlade borax decahydrate is a powdered metallurgical flux that is particularly well-suited for blacksmithing welding operations. This package contains 500 g of product.
It consists of sodium tetraborate decahydrate, also known as borax decahydrate, with the formula Na₂B₄O₇·10H₂O. When used as a metallurgical flux, borax helps protect heated metal surfaces from contact with air and facilitates the dissolution of oxides present on their surfaces.
In cutlery making, it is notably used during forge welding and the production of forged Damascus steel. Its role is to help keep surfaces as clean as possible when assembling the various layers of steel. Decahydrate borax contains water of crystallization: as the temperature rises, it may therefore swell before forming the molten flux.
The amount applied and the method used depend on the forging technique, the steels used, and the cutler’s process. It is recommended to apply only the necessary amount and to follow the manufacturer’s instructions rather than using a one-size-fits-all dosage.
Safety: Sodium tetraborate decahydrate is classified, among other things, as an eye irritant and toxic to reproduction. The product label features the GHS07 and GHS08 hazard pictograms. Avoid generating and inhaling dust, as well as any contact with the eyes. Work in a properly ventilated area and use appropriate protective equipment. The RockBlade product-specific safety data sheet must be consulted before use and serves as the reference for handling, storage, and disposal precautions.
Borax is not a visible component in the finished knife, but it is one of the traditional products used in a blacksmith’s workshop. Its value is particularly evident when manufacturing welded Damascus steel: multiple layers of steel must be joined while hot, while minimizing as much as possible the oxides that could become trapped between them.
It is therefore a product intended for knife makers who wish to master the production of their own steel blanks and experiment with forge-welding techniques. The resulting Damascus steel is entirely dependent on the choice of steels, the number of layers, the deformations created during forging, and the artisan’s expertise. Borax aids in this process: it does not replace proper surface preparation or mastery of the forging process.
