Striated acrylic: presentation and origins

Striated acrylic is an entirely synthetic material, made from colored PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate) resins mixed at high pressure before being cast in blocks. The process consists of superimposing or interlacing several differently-tinted resins, creating swirling or veined patterns that vary from block to block. Born in the industrial plasturgy workshops of the 1970s, this material has gradually conquered the cutlery and violin-making industries for its incomparable aesthetic qualities and high dimensional stability.

Hardness and resistance

Its hardness is between 80 and 90 Shore D [À VÉRIFIER selon fournisseur], giving it excellent resistance to everyday scratches. Unlike unstabilized wood, it does not warp under the effect of humidity, nor does it crack when subjected to moderate temperature variations.

Lightness and density

Its density is generally between 1.15 and 1.20 g/cm³, making it much lighter than dense wood or horn. In the hand, a grooved acrylic handle is lively and well-balanced, particularly appreciated on light-bladed knives and table knives.

Appearance and finish

Patterns vary from manufacturer to manufacturer: narrow veins, large scrolls, inclusions of sequins or metallic foil. Mirror polish is easily achieved with fine-grained sandpaper, followed by wax or polishing paste. The material can also be left in a satin finish for a more discreet look.

How to choose a striated acrylic for your knife?

The choice of striated acrylic depends first and foremost on the knife's intended use and the desired aesthetic finish. Here are the main criteria to consider:

• Type of knife: ideal for collector's knives, personalized table knives or folding knives with colored handles. Less suitable for hunting or heavy-duty outdoor knives, where natural materials offer superior grip.
• Cutlery level: acrylic is recommended for beginners and advanced alike - it's easy to machine, won't tear and tolerates beginner's mistakes better than horn or hardwood.
• Shade and pattern: consider the harmonies with the blade. A damascus blade goes well with a neutral or gold-patterned acrylic; a high-gloss stainless steel blade goes well with bright colors.
• Desired finish: bright polish highlights the veins; satin is better suited to knives for daily use to limit fingerprints.

Frequently asked questions about ribbed acrylic

Is ribbed acrylic water-resistant?

Yes, PMMA acrylic is inherently waterproof. It won't swell, warp or mildew in contact with moisture. This is a major advantage for kitchen knives or table knives that are washed regularly.

Can striated acrylic be glued like wood?

Acrylic can be bonded with two-component epoxy resins or cyanoacrylate glues. Conventional wood glues are not suitable. Degreasing with isopropyl alcohol before gluing significantly improves adhesion.

Is striated acrylic easily scratched?

It is more resistant to light scratches than most untreated woods. In the event of a superficial scratch, a quick polish with 600 and then 1000 grit paper is usually all that's needed to restore the handle's lustre.

What's the difference between striated and full-tone acrylic?

Full-tone acrylic is monochrome or slightly gradient; striated acrylic is made by fusing several resins of different colors, creating a veined or swirled pattern unique to each block. The result is a more distinctive visual signature, akin to veined wood or marble.

Is striated acrylic suitable for woodturners?

Absolutely. Striated acrylic turns very well on a wood lathe equipped with carbide tools. It gives visually spectacular results on rounded shapes where the veins are revealed during cutting. Ensure good chip evacuation and wear a fine-dust mask.
