The Pearly horn was born of a fundamental project launched by Mercorne on the occasion of its 30th anniversary, with a clear ambition: to create a horn-based material entirely designed in France, which valorizes workshop off-cuts and reduces production waste. The zebu horn used in its manufacture - a material with which Mercorne has worked since its foundation in 1992 - is finely ground and then combined with a biosourced resin to form dense, stable plates with characteristic pearly reflections. Winner of the Coutellia Innovation Award 2022, the Pearly horn was honored for its originality and eco-responsible approach at France's largest gathering of art cutlery.

Properties and technical features

Pearly horn has mechanical properties close to those of natural horn, with superior stability thanks to the biosourced resin that fills the gaps between the ground particles. The surface sands easily and reveals a deep, pearly appearance, with variations in hue due to the organic nature of the ground horn - so each slab is slightly unique.

Stability and machinability

Unlike natural horn, Pearly horn is unaffected by humidity and will not warp over time. It can be worked like a composite: sawing, milling, sanding - without excessive odor. The biosourced resin gives it excellent cohesion, even in thin layers. Can be finished with paper, polisher or wax.

Visual appearance

The surface has a natural pearly sheen, with variations in cream, beige and ivory tones. The final result depends on the thickness of the polish and the finish chosen - matte, satin or gloss. Pearly horn takes on a remarkable visual depth when finely sanded and waxed.
