Texalium: origins and composition

Texalium is the result of the cross-fertilization of two technologies from the aerospace and automotive industries: high-strength glass fiber weaving and pure aluminum vacuum deposition. The term "Texalium" refers specifically to this aluminized glass fabric, whose silvery-metallic appearance stands in stark contrast to conventional composites. Its origins date back to the 1980s, when research was carried out into materials that were light, conductive and aesthetically pleasing. Today, it is used in the manufacture of technical parts, racing bodies and, for several years now, in designer cutlery.

Texalium has a well-balanced technical profile for a composite material used in knife handles.

Composition and structure

Texalium consists of glass filaments twisted and woven into a regular weave - usually satin or twill - then coated with a layer of 99.99% pure aluminum, around 200 angstroms thick (or 0.02 microns). This metallic layer is thin enough not to stiffen the fabric, but dense enough to reflect light evenly.

Lightness and rigidity

Once laminated with epoxy resin, Texalium offers a density of between 1.8 and 2.0 g/cm³ [À VÉRIFIER selon épaisseur et résine], considerably lower than that of steel or brass. It resists well to side impact and bending, making it a reliable choice for handle inserts in daily use.

Visual appearance

Its appearance is one of the most distinctive among composites: the glass weave reveals a regular geometric pattern, covered by a silvery metallic veil that changes appearance according to the angle of illumination. It's a material that catches the eye without additional ornamentation.

How to choose Texalium for your knife?

Texalium is particularly well-suited to knifemakers wishing to offer handles with a resolutely contemporary or technical aesthetic. Here are the criteria to consider before including it in your project:

• Intended use: ideal for collector's knives, high-end EDCs (Every Day Carry) and technical demonstration pieces. Less suitable for intensive use in the kitchen or outdoors, where a textured grip is a priority.
• Manufacturing level: Texalium works well with CNC milling or filing, but requires diamond or carbide tools for fine cutting. Reserved for knife-makers who have already worked with composites.
• Blade combinations: Texalium goes naturally with mirror-polished steel, damascus or brushed stainless steel blades. Texalium's metallic appearance creates a strong visual continuity with high-quality steels.
• Finish: can be sanded to 1200 grit for an accentuated mirror finish, or maintained at 400 for a matte, textured appearance. Avoid over-aggressive abrasives, which will obscure the aluminum film.

Frequently asked questions about Texalium

Does Texalium conduct electricity?

The aluminum layer gives Texalium a slight surface conductivity, but this remains very low and is not used for electrical purposes in cutlery. For applications requiring total insulation, G10 or Micarta are more appropriate.

Can Texalium be sanded and polished like any other composite?

Yes, with care. Texalium can be sanded progressively from 120 grain to 1200 grain, working dry or slightly damp. High-speed grinding wheels should be avoided, as they can overheat and dull the aluminum film. Felt polishing with fine paste gives very good results.

What thickness should I choose for a knife handle?

For liner-lock and back-lock knives, 3 to 5 mm inserts are most commonly used. For through-bristle knives, a thickness of 6 to 8 mm may be necessary. Olivier can advise you according to the exact layout of your workpiece.

Is Texalium resistant to humidity and household products?

The epoxy matrix that coats the fibers effectively protects the entire material. Texalium is not affected by occasional dampness or water splashes. On the other hand, prolonged exposure to aggressive solvents (acetone, chlorine) can degrade the surface resin - rinsing with clear water after cleaning is always recommended.

Is Texalium the same material as carbon fiber?

No. Confusion is common due to the similar woven appearance. Carbon fiber is made of pure carbon filaments, which are stiffer and lighter. Texalium uses aluminized glass fibers: it's slightly softer, less expensive, and its silvery finish is very different from the matte black of carbon.
