Reconstituted stone combines the visual minerality of rock with the practicality of a machinable composite. Here are its main characteristics:

Composition and density

The typical ratio is 85% natural stone powder to 15% resin. This high mineral content guarantees authenticity, freshness in the hand and a slightly higher weight than purely synthetic materials. Density varies according to the base stone used, generally between 1.8 and 2.4 g/cm³.

Machinability and finish

This is one of the material's major assets: unlike natural stone, which requires diamond tools and constant lubrication, reconstituted stone can be cut with a hacksaw, shaped with a file or Dremel, and sanded with conventional abrasives up to 2,000 grit. It can then be polished with felt or polishing paste to a deep gloss. It will not crack during machining if speed and pressure are controlled.

What's the difference between natural and reconstituted stone for knife handles?

Natural stone is extracted directly from the ground, cut and polished without the addition of binders. It offers an irreplaceable mineral rendering, but is fragile to machining and may contain invisible cracks. Reconstituted stone is made from powder of the same stone bonded with a resin: it is more homogeneous, easier to work and less likely to crack when cut, while retaining the essential visual appeal.

Can reconstituted stone be sanded and polished like other cutlery materials?

Yes, reconstituted stone can be progressively sanded with 120 to 2,000 grit sandpaper, then polished with polishing paste or a motorized felt-tip. The result can be a very deep mirror polish, particularly visible on darker colors such as black onyx.

Is reconstituted stone resistant to humidity and household products?

The resin binding the stone particles gives the material good resistance to occasional dampness. However, prolonged immersion or repeated contact with acidic or alkaline products can alter the surface. For knives intended for culinary use, it is advisable to dry the handle after each use.

Which glue should I use to fix a reconstituted stone handle?

Two-component, slow-setting epoxy glues (24 h) give the best results on this material. They penetrate slightly into the surface and ensure a solid bond between the reconstituted stone and the blade tang. Avoid using cyanoacrylate glues (super glue) on large surfaces - they can peel off under mechanical stress.

Are the colors stable over time?

The resin used in the manufacture of reconstituted stone is generally UV-resistant to normal exposure. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight may slightly degrade the brightest colors over time. For optimum preservation, a light annual oiling of the surface is sufficient.
