Padauk | Wood for knife handles | Mercorne

Padouk (Pterocarpus soyauxii) is an exotic wood native to Central and West Africa, instantly recognizable by its intense orange-red color, which develops into a warm purplish-brown when exposed to light. Its moderate density—between 0.70 and 0.80 g/cm³—gives it excellent impact resistance while remaining easy to work with in the workshop. Knife makers appreciate its even grain, good dimensional stability, and natural resistance to moisture, making it a reliable material for both kitchen knives and collector’s items.

At Mercorne, padouk is available in pre-cut handles and raw blocks, selected for the regularity of their grain and the intensity of their color. Cut in our workshop in France for 34 years, each piece is inspected before shipment. Not sure which size is right for your project? Olivier personally answers all your technical questions.
