It belongs to the Fabaceae family and reaches heights of 30 to 40 meters, with a straight trunk that provides long, knot-free sections, particularly prized by artisans. Known for decades in cabinetmaking and instrument making, it has gradually gained a foothold in artisanal cutlery thanks to the unique beauty of its wood and its ease of working.

Properties and Technical Characteristics

Padouk has a density ranging from 0.70 to 0.80 g/cm³, placing it in the category of medium-weight woods: durable without being cumbersome, it feels comfortable in the hand once shaped into a handle. Its Janka hardness is estimated at between 1,700 and 2,000 lbf, sufficient to withstand everyday impacts without being crushed by common power tools.

Color and Development

This is its most striking feature: when fresh, padouk displays a vivid orange-red, almost coral hue. Over time and with UV exposure, it gradually evolves into a mahogany brown with purplish highlights. This natural patina is considered a quality by many knife makers, who appreciate the "living" appearance of the handle as the years go by.

Grain and Machinability

The grain is generally straight to slightly interlocked, with a fine, regular grain. Padouk is easy to machine with a router, spindle moulder, and sander. It takes well to finishes such as oil, natural wax, or varnish, revealing greater depth in its color with each step. Caution: Padouk dust can be irritating to the respiratory tract—wearing a suitable mask is recommended in the workshop.
