Palm wood is an unusual material, prized by knife makers for its instantly recognizable appearance. Unlike traditional woods, the palm tree is not a "wood" in the botanical sense: its internal structure, composed of vascular bundles embedded in a fibrous matrix, gives it remarkable resistance to bending and a very distinctive cross-section—marbled with dark spots on a beige to brown background. It is precisely this so-called “end grain” cut that is used for the handles, giving each piece a unique decorative finish.
At Mercorne, palm wood is selected for the consistency of its patterns and its density. Our planks and sections are cut in our workshop in France, ensuring sizes that are ready for use in the workshop. With 139 options available in this category, you’ll find the right sizes for your projects, from pocket knife handles to chef’s knives. Not sure which one to choose?
