Its discovery by European knifemakers is more recent, but its aesthetic qualities are immediately perceptible.

Density and hardness

Its high density, around 0.80 to 0.95 g/cm³ [À VÉRIFIER selon lot], gives it excellent resistance to impact and wear. In use, a ziricote handle perfectly withstands the stresses of a work or kitchen knife in daily use.

Ziricote really stands out visually. Its background color varies from medium to greenish-brown, with intense black veins that trace out irregular arabesques and geographical figures. How do I care for a ziricote handle?

A ziricote handle can be maintained simply by oiling it two or three times a year with a suitable finishing oil (baked linseed oil, Danish oil). Avoid immersing the handle in water, and dry it quickly after prolonged wetting. The wood will remain stable and its natural lustre will be preserved for a long time.

Is ziricote dimensionally stable?

Yes, ziricote has good dimensional stability once dry and properly cut. However, like all dense exotic woods, it is sensitive to significant variations in humidity. Storage in a temperate environment (between 40 and 60% relative humidity) is recommended before use.

What's the difference between a handle and a block of Mercorne ziricote?

Handles are pieces already shaped (rough profiling or thickness cutting), ready to be adjusted and finished by the cutler. Blocks are rough pieces with standardized dimensions, offering greater freedom of shape and design. Both formats are available according to stock depth.

Can ziricote be used for kitchen knives?

Yes, provided you apply a suitable finish (edible oil or natural wax) and avoid prolonged contact with water. Ziricote is not a rot-proof wood; it can be used as a kitchen knife, but regular maintenance is required, similar to that of a walnut or amourette handle.
