Wenge: origins and identity

Wenge(Millettia laurentii, sometimes spelled "wenge" without the accent) is a tree found in the tropical forests of Central Africa, mainly in Congo, Cameroon, Mozambique and Tanzania. Also known as Awong in some regions, it can reach 15 to 25 meters in height, and has a straight trunk particularly suited to cutting into planks. Used for decades in high-end cabinetmaking, violin making and prestige parquet flooring, wenge has naturally entered the world of hand-crafted cutlery thanks to its powerful aesthetics and remarkable robustness.

Properties and technical characteristics

Wenge is a dense, heavy wood, with a density generally between 0.80 and 0.90 g/cm³ [À VÉRIFIER précisément], making it one of the heaviest African species available for cutlery. This high density gives it excellent resistance to impact and daily wear and tear.

Visual appearance and grain

Its color ranges from dark brown to chocolate brown, sometimes almost black, with prominent black veins contrasting with lighter fiber lines. This natural contrast effect is one of wenge's most recognizable visual signatures. The grain is coarse and the texture rather open, with a slightly rough surface in its raw state that requires careful finishing.

Machining behaviour

Wenge works well in rough-cutting - planing, sawing, drilling - but its particular fibrous structure (alternating hard and soft zones) makes polishing a delicate operation. Soft fibers tend to crush under the abrasive if progress is not methodical. Regular grain-by-grain sanding, followed by a finishing oil or natural wax, gives an elegant satin finish. Wenge contains natural oils that can slow the setting of certain glues: degreasing with acetone is recommended before gluing.

How to choose wenge for your knife?

Wenge is suitable for a wide range of knife-makers, but there are a few criteria to help you make the right choice:

• For a kitchen or table knife: choose a handle treated with hard oil for good resistance to humidity. Untreated raw wenge is hygroscopic.
• For a hunting or camp knife: solid wenge offers a firm grip and a nice contrast with stainless steel or damascus blades.
• For beginners: wenge is easy to machine, but requires patience when polishing. Prefer finished or semi-finished handle formats.
• For experienced cutlers: raw blocks offer total freedom of shape, ideal for asymmetrical creations or customized ergonomic profiles.
• Blade combinations: wenge blends very well with dark steels (carbon, damascus with contrasting patterns) and creates a beautiful visual balance with mirror-polished stainless steel blades.

Frequently asked questions about wenge for knives

Is wenge a water-resistant wood?

Untreated raw wenge is sensitive to repeated moisture. For kitchen knives or outdoor use, it is strongly recommended to apply several coats of hard oil (such as baked linseed oil or special wood oil) to protect the fibers and stabilize the piece over time. Well-maintained wenge can last for several decades without noticeable deformation.

Why is wenge difficult to polish?

The structure of wenge alternates between bundles of very dense fibers and softer zones. When polishing, the soft areas wear away faster than the hard ones, which can create an uneven surface if you work too fast or with too coarse abrasives. The key is a methodical progression: sanding from 80 grit to at least 400 grit, finishing with a finishing oil that evens out the appearance.

Is wenge compatible with all glues?

The natural oils contained in wenge may interfere with the setting of certain epoxy glues or traditional wood glues. Before gluing, surfaces should be thoroughly degreased with acetone or isopropyl alcohol, then allowed to dry before applying the glue. Cutlery-grade two-component epoxy resins give excellent results on prepared wenge.

What is the best finish for a wenge handle?

Oil finishes (tung oil, baked linseed oil, special handle oil) are best suited to wenge: they penetrate the fibers, protect without forming a plastic film, and enhance the depth of the grain. Film-forming varnishes are not recommended, as they can flake off under impact. A natural wax finish adds a discreet, elegant satin sheen.

Is wenge on the CITES or IUCN lists?

Wenge(Millettia laurentii) is classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List due to deforestation in its natural range. It is not currently subject to CITES regulations (appendices I, II or III) [À VÉRIFIER selon évolution réglementaire], but it is advisable to ensure traceability of the source of supply.
