Stabilized ground mammoth is derived from the tusk of the woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius), a species extinct for around 4,000 years whose fossils are mainly extracted from the permafrost of Siberia, the Yukon and Alaska. Unlike solid ivory wafers or block-worked pulp, broyé starts from fossil material reduced to powder or fine granules, which are then bound with a synthetic resin and stabilized under high-pressure vacuum. This transformation process produces an entirely homogeneous material, without the fragility or internal fractures typical of raw fossil parts. The resin binds the fossil particles together, preserving their natural shades: cream, beige, ochre, golden brown, sometimes grayish, depending on the degree of mineralization of the original fragments. The result is a material with authentic fossil motifs - veining, mineral stains, Schreger structure on certain pieces - but distributed in a more random and varied way than a solid block. Machining behaviour

Once stabilized, ground mammoth can be machined without any particular difficulty using standard cutlery tools: band saw, belt sander, lathe, milling cutter. It is more homogeneous than solid ivory or pulp, and presents less risk of splintering when drilling. It accepts polishing well and gives a result between satin and gloss, depending on the final grain. As with all resin composite materials, wear a protective mask when fine sanding.

What's the difference between ground mammoth and stabilized mammoth pulp?

Mammoth pulp is processed into a solid block, directly stabilized in its original form. Crushed mammoth pulp is reduced to powder or granules, then recomposed with a resin. Crushed is more homogeneous and easier to machine; pulp retains more of its original fossil structure.

Is stabilized ground mammoth legal to sell and transport?
