Natural compressed paper: presentation and origins

Natural compressed paper is a composite material born of the sustainable design industry. Its best-known form, PaperStone®, was developed in the United States in the 2000s, with the aim of offering an environmentally-friendly alternative to synthetic materials. It is made from recycled paper fibers - often from post-consumer cardboard - bonded with plant-based phenolic resins, then compressed under high pressure and temperature to a dense, stable and homogeneous block. The result is a material of surprising strength, relative lightness and characteristic matte feel.

Density and machining behavior

Its moderate density - around 1.3 g/cm³ [À VÉRIFIER selon lot] - makes it lighter than most synthetic resins, while remaining considerably denser than wood. It machines well with milling and sanding machines: it doesn't crumble, cuts cleanly and responds well to drilling. The final surface, after progressive sanding, has a slightly grainy matte appearance, very pleasant to the hand.

Strength and stability

This material is renowned for its resistance to moisture, stains and light abrasion. Its compressed composition gives it good dimensional stability, limiting the risk of cracking or warping with humidity variations - a real advantage for handles subjected to regular use.

How to choose compressed paper for your knife?

Natural compressed paper is particularly suitable for knife makers looking for a sober, ecological and unusual material. Here are a few criteria to consider:

• Intended use: ideal for kitchen knives, table knives and contemporary art knives. Its matte appearance and good grip make it a good choice for functional as well as aesthetic pieces.
• Cutlery level: accessible to intermediate and experienced cutlers. Machining is smooth but requires good speed control to avoid overheating the surface.
• Finish: compressed paper does not polish like wood or translucent resin. The finish remains matt and textured - precisely what sets it apart. A coat of mineral oil can slightly accentuate surface contrast.
• Blade pairing: works well with patinated steels (carbon, Damascus) for knives with a strong natural character, as well as with stainless steels for a more minimalist, contemporary aesthetic.

Is compressed paper resistant to water and daily use?

Yes, thanks to its compressed structure and resin bond, natural compressed paper has a waterproof surface. It withstands regular contact with moisture without delaminating or swelling, provided the edges are properly sealed or oiled during assembly.

How do I machine compressed paper in the workshop?

This material can be machined with the same tools as resins or micarta: milling cutter, drill press, belt sander. Work at moderate speed to avoid surface heating. Drilling is clean and splinter-free if the feed is well controlled.

What is the finish on compressed paper?

The final surface is matt, slightly textured, with a warm, natural feel close to that of high-end hardboard. It is not polished to a high gloss, which is precisely its aesthetic signature. An oil treatment may slightly darken and saturate shades.

What's the difference between compressed paper and micarta?

Micarta is made from fabrics (linen, canvas, craft paper) impregnated with thermosetting synthetic resins, giving it sharper shades and higher density. Natural compressed paper uses resins of plant origin and recycled paper, giving it a more ecological positioning and a smoother, more homogeneous surface appearance.
