Macassar ebony | Knife handles | Mercorne

Macassar ebony (Diospyros celebica) is one of the most sought-after woods among artisanal knife makers. Native to the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia, this exotic wood is distinguished by its contrasting grain—a deep black background streaked with warm brown or gold—which makes each handle a unique and recognizable piece. Its high density (0.85 to 1.05 g/cm³) gives it excellent impact resistance and remarkable durability, even under conditions of heavy use.

At Mercorne, Macassar ebony is available in handles, half-handles, and blocks, precision-cut in our workshop in France for the past 34 years. Each piece is selected for its grain pattern, stability, and consistency. Not sure which size or format is right for your project? Olivier personally answers your technical questions.
