The spacer: definition and role in cutlery

A spacer is a thin strip of material inserted between the handle plates and the tang of a knife blade. It is generally between 1 and 3 mm thick and runs the full length of the handle. It first appeared in artisan cutlery several decades ago, and is now used in virtually all quality knives, whether handcrafted or semi-industrial. Its main role is to create a barrier between the metal of the tang and the organic materials of the handle, thus limiting the penetration of moisture and grease.

Properties and technical features

They are easy to work with a file, sandpaper or grinding wheel, without splintering or delaminating. Their smooth, homogeneous surface guarantees reliable bonding with epoxy or contact adhesive.

How to choose a knife spacer?

The choice of a spacer depends on several complementary criteria:

• Handle thickness: a thin handle (kitchen knife, pocket knife) calls for a thinner spacer, so as not to weigh the knife down; a more solid handle (survival knife, hunting knife) is well-suited to a thicker spacer.
• Visual contrast: a black insert between light wood plates creates a much-appreciated effect of depth; a colored insert on a dark horn adds a graphic touch without overloading.
• Knifeuse: for knives intended for use in wet environments (cooking, fishing, outdoor), use a vulcanized fiber insert rather than a paper insert.
• Knifemaker's skill level: vulcanized fiber interlayers are ideal for beginners, as they forgive minor cutting inaccuracies and stick easily.

Can an insert be bonded with epoxy?

Yes, Mercorne vulcanized fiber interlayers bond perfectly with two-component epoxy or contact cement. A light sanding of the surface before bonding improves adhesion.

How do I machine a vulcanized fiber interlayer?

Vulcanized fibers are easy to work with a file, abrasive paper (80 to 180 grit) or grinding wheel. The material does not snap or delaminate. As with all fine sanding, light respiratory protection is recommended.

Can an insert be used with any type of insert?

Absolutely. The vulcanized fiber pad is compatible with all inserts - natural wood, stabilized wood, bone, horn, G10, micarta, acrylic. Its neutral surface is compatible with all common cutlery adhesives.

Are spacers essential for a quality knife?
