G10 belongs to the family of laminated composite materials, classified according to the NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association) standard. The acronym designates a composite based on woven fiberglass, saturated with thermosetting epoxy resin, then hot-pressed until fully polymerized. Originally developed for industrial electronics because of its insulating properties, it gradually conquered the world of cutlery and firearms thanks to its remarkable mechanical performance. Today, G10 is one of the most widely used synthetic materials for knife handles worldwide.

Properties and technical features

G10 is distinguished by a combination of properties rarely found in a single handle material:

• Water resistance: waterproof, it won't swell, warp or degrade with humidity - ideal for use in marine or outdoor environments.
• Lightweight: its moderate density [À VÉRIFIER : environ 1,7 g/cm³] makes the knife lighter without compromising structural strength.
• Impact and tensile strength: the cross-layered fiberglass structure absorbs mechanical stress and resists repeated impacts.
• Dimensional stability: unaffected by variations in temperature and humidity, G10 retains its original dimensions over time.
• Ease of machining: it is easy to cut, drill, shape and sand with conventional tools. It accepts complex shapes and surface textures.

How to choose G10 for a knife handle?

G10 is suitable for all levels, from beginners to professional knife makers. Here are the criteria to consider:

• Intended use: for a kitchen or hunting knife subject to humidity, G10 is often preferred to wood. For tactical or survival knives, it is the benchmark.
• Cutting edge thickness: common cutting edge thicknesses are 3, 4, 5 and 6 mm. Choose according to tang profile and desired curve.
• Surface texture: a smooth surface is more aesthetically pleasing; a structured surface (liner, checkerboard) improves grip in difficult conditions.
• Color: G10 knives can be highly personalized in terms of aesthetics. Some cutlers combine two colors to create contrasting effects.

Frequently asked questions about G10

What's the difference between G10 and Micarta?

G10 is based on fiberglass impregnated with epoxy resin. Micarta uses different fibers - linen, cotton, paper or carbon - impregnated with phenolic resin. G10 is generally smoother on the surface and slightly stiffer. Micarta often develops a more matte, "organic" appearance over time. Both are excellent for knife handles, the choice depending mainly on the aesthetic desired.

Is G10 difficult to work with for beginners?

No. G10 is one of the easiest synthetic materials to machine in cutlery. It can be drilled and cut with conventional tools, does not crack when drilled, and sands well. The only precaution is to work under vacuum or with a mask, as fiberglass dust is irritating to the respiratory tract.

Is G10 suitable for kitchen knives?

Yes, in fact this is one of its most common uses in professional cutlery. Its total impermeability makes it hygienic and easy to clean. It withstands repeated immersion in water and common cleaning products. Several leading kitchen knife brands use G10 as standard on their professional ranges.

Can G10 be stained or painted?

G10 is difficult to stain thoroughly once molded, as the epoxy resin does not absorb colorants as porous wood would. Color is built into the manufacturing process. On the other hand, it is possible to paint or lacquer its surface with paints suitable for plastics, but this treatment remains superficial and can be damaged with use.

How do I maintain a G10 handle?

Maintenance is minimal: just clean with soapy water. Unlike wooden handles, G10 requires no regular oiling or surface treatment. To revive a scratched surface, a light sanding with fine grain (600 to 1,000) followed by buffing can restore the material's lustre.
